    Death Penalty Empty Death Penalty

Post by Maca Sun Apr 29, 2012 12:56 pm

I was reading a thread and Slazy brought up an interesting point

Slazy wrote: if we introduced death penalty it wouldnt happen

So, I guess the main point of discussion is will crime rate be brought down if a possible Death Sentence is introduced?

alright, im not gonna go all indepth about this topic
truth is, the two sides of the argument both revolve around the idea of whether death penalty acts as a deterrent for criminals as it is a harsh penalty, or the harshness is too much and will actually exacerbate the criminal mind and it is inhumane.

the problem isnt having the death penalty, but wat crimes its for. theres increasing gun crimes in australia and the trend is continually rising, personally i dont think its sucha bad idea. we should most definitely hav the death penalty only if death penalties are given responsibly for crimes detrimental enough to recieve one in order to rid its potentially hindering effects.

The only crime i would consider having the death penalty as punishment would be murder. I think that's quite fair, having your own life taken away if you take away someone else's.

Basically what Henry said; according to the severity of a person's crime is where death penalty comes in. But then again; that introduces actvists about humar right and what not.
If this was put in place however, i'd say murder crimes would lower a tad bit; but theres always that small proportion of criminals who would probably still commit crimes either way.
I'd say it wouldn't be such a bad idea as long as it would only apply to the most severe of crimes.

not that i dont agree with the fact that by killing someone else, u surrender ur right to live; its just that the other side of the argument would be doubting the government's rights to treat a murderer with the death sentence and the underlying irony/hypocrisy.

Imo I think the govt. should actually be given the right to carry out a death sentence. After all, who gave the right for a criminal to carry out an act of murder themself in the first place?

if this was brought up again in government, and it actually managed to pass both houses, whole of australia will be divided up with this, and imo people will want to get rid of it.

It will never pass government lol

It would have to be strictly monitored and would depend on the surity of the judge. I mean, imagine years later discovering new evidence to prove his innocence.

But that said, those who say "jail for life is worse than death" are wrong, it might suck but its also coming out of tax payers money to keep them there.

It won't ever happen but pety crimes should be treated harsher was my point, and underage offenders need to be dealt with in a harsher fashion than just the slap on the wrist that seems to come with anything they do

    ^this.

Only good thing I can see about the death penalty is resolving issues with overcrowding in prisons, and as far as I know (thought don't count on it being true lol) Australia doesn't have issues with that? People who do things that would be punishable by death would probably do them anyway regardless of whether there was a death penalty or not, spending 25 to life in prison is still pretty bad in the grand scheme of things.
